Instagram Shopping and IGTV: selling from the feed

Shopping tags, Stories stickers and the new IGTV turn Instagram into a storefront. What to set up, what to post and how to measure it this year.

Overview

The short answer

Instagram now lets a business tag products in feed posts and Stories, send the shopper to a product page in two taps, and, as of June, publish vertical video up to an hour long on IGTV. For a brand selling physical goods, shopping tags are worth setting up this month; they are free, they remove the "link in bio" detour, and they are starting to appear in Explore. IGTV is a different matter: a new format with no ads and no shopping links yet, so treat it as an experiment rather than a plan. Here is how to set up both and judge whether they are earning their keep.

What changed on Instagram this year

Growth & Digital · 2018

The platform passed a billion monthly users in June, and the commerce features have arrived fast. In March, shopping tags in feed posts rolled out beyond the US to a few dozen more countries. In June, product stickers came to Stories, and IGTV launched as both a tab inside Instagram and a stand-alone app. Instagram has also said that shopping posts will show in Explore, which gives tagged content a discovery path that regular posts do not have.

The mechanics are simple. You tag up to five products in a single-image post, or one per image in a carousel, and one product sticker per Story. A tap opens a product card with price and description, and a second tap goes to the product page on your site. Nothing is bought inside Instagram, which is why nothing is charged. Your site, your checkout, your conversion rate.

Setting up shopping tags

Growth & Digital · 2018

The setup usually takes a week, most of it waiting for approval.

  1. Switch to a business profile and connect it to the Facebook Page for the same business. The Page must be the one that owns the catalog.
  2. Build a product catalog in Facebook. If you are on Shopify, install the Facebook sales channel and the catalog syncs automatically; BigCommerce has the same. On other platforms, create a catalog in Business Manager and upload a product feed (a CSV or a scheduled feed URL) with ID, title, description, price, availability, image link and product link.
  3. Check eligibility. Physical goods only, sold directly by you, in a supported country, complying with the commerce policies. No services, no gift cards, no event tickets, nothing in the restricted categories.
  4. Submit for review from the app settings. Approval tends to take two to five days, sometimes longer.
  5. Turn on product tagging in settings once approved, then tag products as you create posts. Go back and tag your best-performing posts from the last three months; the tags apply retroactively and the posts already have reach.

Give the catalog some care. The product title and the first line of the description are what the shopper sees on the card. Titles pulled straight from an inventory system ("WMN TEE CREW BLK M") lose sales on that screen.

What to post once tagging is live

Growth & Digital · 2018

Tagging works best on content that already looks native to the feed. Three patterns reliably outperform a product on a white background.

  • Product in use. A person wearing, holding or using the item, with one tag on the item.
  • The flat lay or the set. Three to five products in one frame, each tagged. This is the carousel format at its best.
  • Stories with a sticker. A ten-second clip of the product with a single sticker, posted the same day you restock or launch, is a good substitute for the swipe-up link that accounts under 10,000 followers do not have.

A cadence that works for most small catalogs: two or three tagged feed posts a week out of five to seven total, so that the feed does not become a catalog, plus product stickers in Stories whenever there is a reason (new arrival, back in stock, a limited run). Tagging every post is a fast way to lose followers.

IGTV: what it is and is not yet

Growth & Digital · 2018

IGTV is vertical, full-screen video from 15 seconds to 10 minutes for most accounts, up to 60 minutes for larger and verified ones. It launched without advertising, without shoppable links inside the video and with the only clickable element being a link in the description. Discovery is weak: the IGTV tab recommends from accounts you follow and from popular creators, and the stand-alone app has had a slow start.

That does not make it useless. The sensible positions this year are:

SituationWhat to do with IGTV
You already produce Stories or YouTube videoRepurpose: cut vertical versions of tutorials, behind-the-scenes and product demos into 2-5 minute episodes
You have a personality-led brandTest a weekly show format for a quarter and watch completion rates
You have no video capability yetSkip it until there is an ad or shopping mechanism

If you do publish, lead with the first three seconds, add captions (most viewing is muted), and write a description with a plain link to the product or collection, since that is the only path to a sale. Episode length between two and five minutes gets the best watch-through in the early data most brands are seeing.

Measuring whether it works

Growth & Digital · 2018

Instagram Insights now shows product-tag taps and product-page visits for each shopping post, which tells you whether people are interested. It does not tell you whether they bought. For that, you need your analytics in order.

  • Instagram shopping traffic arrives in Google Analytics as a referral from instagram.com or l.instagram.com. Set up a segment or a channel grouping so it does not get lumped in with your organic social traffic.
  • On Shopify, the Instagram sales channel reports orders attributed to it directly.
  • Compare three numbers monthly: tag taps, sessions from Instagram, and orders from Instagram. A typical healthy pattern for a fashion or home brand is a tap-to-visit rate of 20 to 40 percent and a conversion rate on those visits of 1 to 2 percent, somewhat below site average because the traffic is discovery-stage.
  • Watch the follower trend. If it dips after you start tagging, you are tagging too often.

Give it ninety days before you judge. The Explore placement in particular needs time to accumulate.

Common mistakes

Growth & Digital · 2018

Running tagging from a personal account. The feature needs a business profile and a Page; without the Page, there is no catalog.

Catalog mismatches. A tagged product that is out of stock, mispriced or linked to a dead URL costs trust twice over. Keep the feed syncing daily.

Treating IGTV like YouTube. Horizontal video with black bars, long intros, no captions. The format is vertical and the viewer is a thumb-flick away from leaving.

No tracking. Tagging without UTM parameters or a referral segment means you will never know whether the channel sells anything.

Ignoring Stories. Product stickers are new and under-used, and Stories reach is often higher than feed reach for brands under 50,000 followers.

How Sigma Extreme approaches this

Growth & Digital · 2018

Social commerce sits inside a connected plan across brand, growth, web and technology, because a shopping tag is only as good as the product page it lands on and the catalog that feeds it. Discover is an audit of the account, the catalog data, the product pages and the analytics, plus a look at what competitors in the category are doing on the platform. Plan sets the content mix, the tagging cadence, the Stories calendar, the measurement setup and a small paid test. Build is the catalog cleanup, the pixel and analytics work, the creative templates and the first month of content. Improve is the monthly review of taps, sessions and orders, with creative and cadence adjusted to what the numbers say.

How we've done it before

Growth & Digital · 2018

The ecommerce growth engagement is the representative pattern. A retailer with a strong Instagram following but a weak link between the account and the store moved to a synced catalog, cleaned up product titles and images, and shifted its posting to a mix of in-use photography, tagged carousels and Stories stickers tied to launches. Analytics were restructured so Instagram traffic and orders could be seen on their own. Over the following quarter, referral sessions from Instagram rose substantially, revenue attributed to the channel became visible for the first time, and the results shaped a modest catalog-ad budget that scaled from there.

FAQ

Frequently asked

What do I need before I can tag products on Instagram?

A business profile connected to a Facebook Page, a product catalog in Facebook (built in Business Manager or synced from Shopify or BigCommerce), physical goods that comply with Facebook's commerce policies, and approval, which usually takes a few days. Once approved, the tagging option appears when you create a post. Services, digital products and most regulated categories are not eligible yet.

Does Instagram take a cut of sales from shopping tags?

No. In the US a shopping tag opens a product detail page inside Instagram and then sends the shopper to your website to buy. You pay nothing to Instagram for the referral. The only costs are the catalog work, the content and, if you promote posts, the ad spend. Watch for that to change as Instagram tests native checkout.

Is IGTV worth the effort for a small business?

Treat it as an experiment, not a channel, for the rest of this year. It launched in June with no ads, no shopping links and uncertain discovery, so there is no revenue mechanism yet. If you already make vertical video for Stories, repurposing it into longer IGTV episodes costs little. If you do not, do not build a production budget around IGTV until it proves it can hold an audience.
